The SURFRATZ Story
SURFRATZ was born in 1980 out of a simple idea: the surf rat who never wanted to leave the water. That restless, salt-crusted character who'd surf all day, every day, given the chance, became the heart of the brand. The extra Z was added deliberately — not one surf rat, but all of them, the whole tribe of them chasing the next set.
The eagle crest that has carried the brand ever since wasn't a passing design choice. I wanted something with the weight and permanence of a family crest, a mark built to outlast trends and still mean something decades on — which is exactly what it's done.
SURFRATZ started as a cottage industry, built stall by stall at markets around Noosa and the Sunshine Coast. From there it grew into a real manufacturing operation — a factory of 35 machinists producing garments under the SURFRATZ label. The brand found its way well beyond Australian shores, exporting to Canada, the Canary Islands, Japan and the USA, and for a number of years it was made under license in New Zealand.
The brand was eventually sold off, and SURFRATZ lay dormant for many years. Now it's being brought back through small, considered runs of product — a revival of the crest, the name, and the surf rat spirit it was built on in 1980.
